This week on Meet The Team Monday, we’re joined by Ross Hutchinson our Website Designer at Techspire Solutions.
Q. Tell us a bit about yourself and how you started working for Techspire Solutions?
Hi everyone, like it says above my name is Ross. I am 19 and I stay just outside Glasgow in Scotland. I started studying Computer Science last year but withdrew from the course in March after feeling like it wasn’t where I was meant to be. I did however start an internship at a Baptist church up here in Scotland alongside some part time work in a golf club professional shop and doing website design for Techspire Solutions. I met Joshua through Laura, our Marketing Manager, and as a result of my previous website design experience I was brought onboard to help meet our growing demand in that area, some examples of which you can go view in our case studies section of the website!
Q. What is it about Website Designing specifically that you enjoy so much?
I know how valuable a company interacts with its customers is and how big a difference an accessible website can make to a business. I love being able to bring our client’s ideas to life in a way that helps them better meet the needs of their customers. It’s also been great getting to put to use the skills that I picked up in my time at university that I thought I may never come to use again in such an enjoyable, exciting way!
Q. What has been your biggest challenge and how did you overcome it?
I think my biggest challenge was beginning to get familiar with the different website design tools that we use and being able to use my own discernment and creative liberties to make changes to a website that I feel would benefit it and the client as well as being able to pitch the ideas in a way that shows confidence in both my decision and the idea itself. It is something I’m always working on now and I can really see the difference in how I used to present ideas compared to how I present them now and the difference in my confidence of my own decision making through that.
Q. In your personal life what was a ‘pinch me’ moment in the last year?
I feel like for me the past year has been full of those ‘pinch me’ moments going all the way back to when I finally made the decision to leave university after weeks of conversations with various people. Then obviously COVID-19 hit and all the plans that I had made for the coming year felt like they had been shattered as my family shielded due to my younger brother and grandparents. After what felt like forever, I finally got news that my internship was going ahead and that I had a place secured for it which meant I could finally attempt to plan the coming year.
Over the course of that time, I was constantly in and out of work at the golf club with the ever-changing restrictions although I was still incredibly appreciative that I still had a job to go back to after the first lockdown. Then came January where I was given the opportunity to come and work for Techspire Solutions which I have loved since starting! That brings us up to now when we have just been given the news that Scotland is beginning to relax restrictions moving into April with the goal of no restrictions come the end of June. I know that probably sounded like just a rundown of the entire year but for me it has been such a roller coaster ride that it is hard to select one individual moment.
Q. To round us off, what is your favourite positive quote?
For me as a Christian this verse from the bible has been with me throughout the pandemic in a time where I’m unsure what’s going on and what the future is going to look like; “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” – Jeremiah 29:11
